  • New Engineering Class 1 qualification has been developed
  • Seafarers will only be required to complete 1 qualification to achieve Chief Engineer (Class 1) and Second Engineer
  • Second Engineer (Class 2) and Chief Engineer (Class 1) have been incorporated into 1 qualification to align with STCW
  • Second Engineer (Class 2) qualification will to be deleted
  • Advanced Class 1 and Intermediate Class 2 units have been merged together including 2 basic units (see table below)
  • New ETO units have been included into this qualification (MARB996X Use internal communication systems, operate computers and computer networks on ships; MARB997X Operate and maintain ship power systems exceeding 1,000 volts; MARB998X Maintain control and safety systems hotel and equipment; MARB999X Maintain and repair bridge navigation equipment and ship communication systems)
  • Seafarers have the option of developing skills to meet specialist STCW training requirements (see Group D – specialist electives)

Note:  The MAR60215 Advanced Diploma of Maritime Operations (Marine Engineering Class 1) will stay in place to allow those who hold MAR60115 Advanced Diploma of Maritime Operations (Marine Engineering Class 2) to advance to the next level.

Background

The Australian Industry and Skills Committee (AISC) has commissioned the review of the MAR Maritime Training Package. The project covers the review of Maritime Operations qualifications to incorporate the Australian Maritime Safety Authority’s (AMSA) certification requirements and strengthen assessment requirements.

The qualifications being reviewed in this project include:

Near Coastal

  • MAR50613 Diploma of Maritime Operations (Marine Engineering Class 3 Near Coastal)
  • MAR40518 Certificate IV in Maritime Operations (Marine Engine Driver Grade 1 Near Coastal)

Blue Waters

  • MAR60215 Advanced Diploma of Maritime Operations (Marine Engineering Class 1)
  • MAR60115 Advanced Diploma of Maritime Operations (Marine Engineering Class 2)
  • MAR50115 Diploma of Maritime Operations (Engineer Watchkeeper)

The expected submission of the Case for Endorsement will be submitted to the Australian Industry and Skills Committee (AISC) by 31 March 2020.

The Maritime Industry Reference Committee (IRC) will have oversight of this project, which will be facilitated by Australian Industry Standards (AIS) in consultation with industry stakeholders. A Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) will be formed.
