The AIS Industry Insights Strategy produces quantitative and qualitative research for use by the Industry Reference Committees (IRC) we support. The information below is drawn from this work, and is complemented by ongoing scanning and analysis of the industry environment domestically, and internationally. It is provided to assist all stakeholders that have an interest in the skills needs of the Rail industry.
The Rail industry underpins Australian business as it carries people and commodities on over 33,000km of track across the country. It has an estimated annual revenue of $22.94 billion, adding $9.44 billion to the Australian economy in 2016. The industry employs more than 55,500 people across 932 companies comprising private and public operators, passenger and freight operators, track owners and managers, manufacturers and suppliers that operate in urban, regional, and rural areas of Australia.

RAIL IRC SKILLS FORECAST – 2017
The IRC Skills Forecasts focus on the prioritisation of the skill needs of the industry sectors each IRC has responsibility for. They are developed and reviewed annually and submitted on behalf of the IRC to the Australian Industry and Skills Committee (AISC) for approval. This document replaces the IRC Workplan released in September 2016. The Rail Industry Reference Committee has assigned responsibility for the Rail specific components of the TLI Transport and Logistics Training Package.
The document is deliberately brief, it does not seek to capture every issue within every sector. It is a snapshot of a continually evolving story that is intended to alert and inform a wide audience and enhance their capacity to act.
IRCs are required to consult broadly with stakeholders to ensure a whole-of-industry view about the opportunities and challenges for the workforce and the Training Package review work necessary to meet industry needs. This consultation process occurred throughout January-April 2016.
Industry Overview: includes information on the overall value and contribution to the Australian economy, including current challenges and opportunities.
Employment includes information on skills shortages, workforce supply side challenges and opportunities, and key workforce data.
Skills Outlook: contains national and international trends, priority skills for industry and other skills related insights.
Proposed Schedule of Work: draws on the information in the earlier sections to clearly articulate the IRCs priorities for Training Package review and development across the four-year period on a year by year basis.
The Rail IRC Skills Forecast – 2017 is currently with the AISC for its consideration and approval. Work approved by the AISC will become part of the overall National Schedule across all IRCs in the National Training System.
